This week, Samantha Bee grills author Michael Rubens; author-illustrator George O’Connor draws in Brooklyn students; and the Eric Carle Museum dedicates “Bobbie’s Meadow.”

An Author Tell-All

Michael Rubens celebrated the release of Emily and the Spellstone (Clarion) at Books of Wonder in New York City on June 27. Joining Rubens was comedian and political commentator Samantha Bee, who works with Rubens on her show Full Frontal with Samantha Bee. She followed Rubens’s reading from his book with an amusing author Q&A.

Meet the Artist

Graphic novelist George O’Connor (seen here) was among several children’s authors and illustrators to visit Sunset Park’s P.S. 24 on June 23 to share their work and meet students. The school’s events were sponsored by NYC City Councilman Carlos Menchaca and the Brooklyn Book Festival. After a full day of author and illustrator visits (including Brian Floca, Jorge Aguirre, Katy Wu, and Jason Fry), the school hosted a book fair for students, their families, and the surrounding community, with author-illustrator Raúl Colón kicking off the evening’s festivities.

Bobbie’s Meadow

Eric Carle (seen here), along with staff of the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, and more than 200 guests attended the groundbreaking ceremony for “Bobbie’s Meadow,” a space created to honor the memory of Barbara Carle, the museum’s cofounder and wife of Eric, who died in 2015. The commemorative space is located in the museum’s apple orchard.
