This week, the Baltic Summit holds a screening of Ashes in the Snow; Ally Carter visits Alaska; Enchanted Lion honors Liniers and Helen Borten; and Kate Hosford celebrates the release of Mama’s Belly.

History in the Making

The Baltic Summit recently held in Washington, D.C., included a screening of Ashes in the Snow, the film adaptation of Ruta Sepetys’s Between Shades of Gray. Sepetys (l.) and the film’s director Marius Markevicius discussed the novel and its adaptation. The president of Lithuania, Dalia Grybauskaitė, also shared her thoughts on the book and film, calling the story “a worldwide testimony of truth about a nation that resisted and survived annihilation.”

What a View!

Author Ally Carter launched her national book tour for her novel, Not If I Save You First (Scholastic Press), at Hearthside Books in Juneau, Alas., where she also visited middle schools. Carter decided to set the novel in Alaska after being inspired during a previous vacation to the state. Carter’s tour will continue through April with stops in Wichita, Omaha, St. Louis, and Chicago.

Some Enchanted Evening

Enchanted Lion held a launch party for Argentinian cartoonist Liniers and his book Macanudo: Olga Rules! at Book Culture on the Upper West Side on April 5. Enchanted Lion dressed up a window of the bookstore with a Liniers theme for the event. Also honored at the launch was author-illustrator Helen Borten, whose picture book, The Jungle, is being reissued by Enchanted Lion this June. Here, Liniers (l.) shares some details from the pages of his book with Borten. During the festive evening, Liniers live-painted with attendees while a musician performed Spanish guitar.

Book Baby

Kate Hosford celebrated the launch of her picture book, Mama’s Belly (Abrams), illustrated by Abigail Halpin, on April 15 at Books of Wonder in New York City. During the event, Hosford (r.) spoke in conversation with author-illustrator Melissa Iwai to a full house of attendees.
