Veronica Roth (center) was recently on tour for her second title in the Carve the Mark series, The Fates Divide (HarperCollins/Tegen). Among Roth’s many tour stops, she visited Main Street Books in St. Charles, Mo., where she welcomed 500 attendees. She spoke in conversation with fellow YA author Kara Thomas (The Cheerleaders, Delacorte) about the writing process and creating complex female characters. Here, Thomas and Roth sign books for fans.
A Sweet Conclusion
Author Siobhan Vivian concluded her national tour for Stay Sweet (Simon & Schuster) with a launch party at her local indie, White Whale Bookstore in Pittsburgh, Pa. The artisan ice cream shop, Millie’s, scooped up free ice cream for attendees. Vivian consulted with employees at Millie’s as she was writing Stay Sweet, which features a beloved ice cream stand.
What a Cover!
Hena Khan kicked off her tour for Power Forward (S&S/Salaam Reads), the first book in the Zayd Saleem, Chasing the Dream series, at Once Upon a Time Bookstore in Montrose, Calif., on May 2. Here, Khan is joined by Zareen Jaffery (l.), executive editor of Salaam Reads, and Adam Amin, whose image appears on the cover of Power Forward; he is also Jaffery’s nephew.
Bear Chair
Recently, illustrator Rilla Alexander converted the Land gallery and gift shop in Portland, Ore., into the front porch she created for Jane Yolen’s A Bear Sat on My Porch Today (Chronicle), as part of an interactive show for kids that runs until May 20. School groups are invited to visit the gallery to view the illustrations on display, read sections from the book, and pretend to be some of the animals who invade the protagonist’s porch. The show also features a giant bear modeled after Yolen’s and Alexander’s character that doubles as a comfy chair for attendees.
