This week, Livia Blackburne and Julia Kuo have a dream-y launch; Malcolm Mitchell speaks at a “Super” event; and a TikTokker takes on a new title.

Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

On January 10, author Livia Blackburne, illustrator Julia Kuo, and their editor, Connie Hsu, virtually visited Once Upon a Time Bookstore in Montrose, Calif., to launch their picture book I Dream of Popo (Roaring Brook). After they presented a read-aloud, the Taiwanese American team discussed the book’s inspiration, bicultural liminal spaces, and how linguistic and geographic distance affects familial relationships. Jessica Palacios at Once Upon a Time moderated the q&a.

My Very Favorite Launch in the Whole Wide World

Super Bowl champion and author Malcolm Mitchell was joined by longtime friend Jarrett J. Krosoczka (Hey, Kiddo; Star Wars: Jedi Academy) to celebrate the release of Mitchell’s latest picture book, My Very Favorite Book in the Whole Wide World (illus. by Michael Robertson, Orchard), last December. Little Shop of Stories in Decatur, Ga., hosted the Facebook Live event. Mitchell gave the audience sneak peeks of his book, talked about his journey to literacy and what inspired him to write picture books, imagined a collaboration with Krosoczka, and held a q&a session.

From TikTok to Zoom Room

Last month, teen internet celebrity Charli D’Amelio digitally dropped by RJ Julia Booksellers in Madison, Conn., in honor of her debut, Essentially Charli: The Ultimate Guide to Keeping It Real (Amulet). The sold-out Zoom event featured D’Amelio answering questions from guests, and chatting about the book, her TikTok following, and her family.
