The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art has revealed the recipients of its 2022 Carle Honors, which will be celebrated at an event this fall.

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, represented by Jeff Conyers, has been named Angel. Conyers serves as president of the organization, which aims to promote early literacy by distributing books monthly to the homes of children up to age five. Founded in 1995 by singer-songwriter Dolly Parton, the library donates more than 1.8 million books each month worldwide, and has given more than 180 million books total since its creation.

Faith Ringgold, painter, teacher, and award-winning author, was selected as Artist Honoree in recognition of her contribution as “a creative and cultural force” and “a role model for artists and scholars.” Ringgold’s debut picture book, Tar Beach, garnered more than 20 awards, including the 1991 Caldecott Honor and Coretta Scott King Award.

Ajia (阿甲), author, educator, and one of China’s most esteemed translators of Western children’s literature, has been named Bridge Honoree. He has translated more than 200 picture books from English into Chinese, including works by Margaret Wise Brown, Beatrix Potter, and Maurice Sendak.

Wade and Cheryl Hudson have been chosen as Mentor Honorees for their works as children’s authors, publishers, and champions for diversity, equity, and inclusion. In 1988, the husband-and-wife team founded Just Us Books, which focuses on stories that celebrate Black people, history, and culture.

The awards will be presented at a benefit gala and silent art auction on the evening of September 29 at Guastavino’s in New York City; there will also be a virtual component.
