Recently an author celebrated a young readers adaptation, a launch event turned into game night, an exhibition honoring a children’s author closed, an author made her debut, collaborators took part in arts and crafts, and a museum welcomed an author for an event.
A New Way to Spread the Word
Clint Smith and Sonja Cherry-Paul celebrated the launch of How the Word Is Passed (Adapted for Young Readers) (Little, Brown) with an event on September 28. Hosted by local indie Loyalty Bookstore, Smith and Cherry-Paul made an appearance at the Martin Luther King Jr. Library in Washington, D.C., to discuss their new adaptation with author Jason Reynolds and Loyalty Bookstore’s Hannah Oliver Depo. Based on Smith’s adult memoir, the book takes readers across the country to learn about the history of slavery. Here (from l.): Reynolds, Smith, Cherry-Paul, and Depo celebrate a successful evening.
Game Night
The 108 Main in Narrowsburg, N.Y., hosted Alison Green Myers (c.) for a launch party on September 27 for her new novel This Way to Happy (Dutton). The middle grade book follows Reilly, who finds herself struggling to connect with her family after her amusement park owner grandfather die. At the event, Myers hosted a game show with fellow authors Meera Trehan (l.) and Alexandra Villasante (r.).
The Door Is Always Open
On September 16, Sophia Jansson made an appearance at the Brooklyn Public Library’s Central Library location to discuss the closing of Tove Jansson and the Moomins: The Door Is Always Open, an exhibition celebrating the late author-illustrator Tove Jansson. Jansson, Tove’s niece, held a discussion about her aunt’s work, ahead of a screening of The Summer Book, a new film based on Tove Jansson’s novel for adults. This Raging Debut
De Elizabeth kicked off the tour for her dark romantic fantasy, This Raging Sea (Holiday House), with a stop at Kiss & Tale Bookshop in Collingswood, N.J., on September 23. Author S.T. Gibson joined De Elizabeth for a conversation about crafting fantasy novels and Elizabeth signed copies of her book for readers. On Cloud Nine
On September 27, the Strand in New York City gave author Allison Wortche and illustrator Cat Min a warm welcome for their event celebrating the release of their new picture book Bear in the Air (Knopf). The picture book follows the titular Bear who enjoys a hot air balloon ride until he realizes he doesn’t know how to land. The collaborators gave a storytime and hosted an arts and crafts session with the young attendees to create their own hot air balloons. Here, Min (l.) and Wortche join in on the activity.
On Top of the World
In celebration of World Architecture Day on October 5, Jeanne Walker Harvey held an event at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C., on to share her book The Glass Pyramid: The Story of the Louvre Museum and Architect I.M. Pei (Atheneum). The picture book, illustrated by Khoa Le, highlights the achievements of the renowned architect, who successfully redesigned the glass pyramid of the Louvre. Here, Harvey signs copies for young attendees.
