An inherent sense of wonder and curiosity is not only the hallmark of childhood, but the inspiration for the 2026 Children’s Book Week poster, shown here for the first time. The Children’s Book Council and Every Child a Reader, which have named Caldecott Honor artist Grace Lin as this year’s poster illustrator, also announced the theme: “Books: Get Curious.”
The Taiwanese American author-illustrator was tapped for her ability to share and celebrate her culture through literature, exposing young readers to the diverse world around them. “Her illustrations always give us a sense of welcome, and that openheartedness is so needed now—and always,” associate executive director Shaina Birkhead said.
Protector and Provider
When presented with several options for this year’s theme, Lin chose the curiosity angle, a trait that she believes kids need to thrive. “We are living in a time where there is a segment of the population that is trying to curtail that curiosity with book banning and unnecessary restrictions,” Lin said. “Right now, curiosity, with all its joy and wonder, needs protection.”
On the poster are a Chinese stone lion and the cub, symbolizing guardians of the future, framed by stacks of books on either side. Lin chose to emulate the tradition of hanging banners around doors during the Lunar New Year. These decorative elements serve to ward off bad luck, as well as usher in good news. “In this image, the books not only make the entryway to curiosity but, like the lion, protect it,” she said.
Lin believes that inquisitive readers of all ages will want to know how she selected the individual books on the poster. While most were either personal picks or suggestions from author friends, she said, “A lot of it was based on what colors looked good. At one point, I sent an emergency message to friends begging them to send me images of pink or red spines!” She also included Jane Mount’s Books Make Good Friends as a salute to the picture book’s similar stacked-spines design.
The CBC is partnering with Lin’s publisher, Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, to promote the 2026 poster. Interested libraries, bookstores, schools, and parents are invited to register online for Book Week, which is scheduled for May 4–10, now through the end of March.
Two posters per location will be shipped in April, along with a note from Lin about the inspiration for her design. For more information about Book Week, visit the Every Child a Reader website.
