Barnes & Noble has a free reader app for the iPad called the BN eReader. With the app, users can buy and read e-books, magazines and newspapers from B&N’s e-bookstore, as well as accessing their personal digital libraries on the site. The app also allows users to share their e-books, a feature which the retailer says is a first for an app like this. With the sharing technology, users can select certain titles from their library to lend to friends with a Nook, iPad, iPhone or iPod touch (as well as a PC), for a 14-day period.

The app also allows users to customize their library, including by color and font. Douglas Gottlieb, v-p of digital products for Barnes & Noble.com, said the app has “book-centric touches…including some extra large text sizes, ample margins, and line lengths and spacing inspired by classic book design conventions.” The app can be downloaded at www.bn.com/iPad, and B&N is also giving customers who create a BN.com account, as well as download the app, three complimentary titles from its Barnes & Noble Classic Series—Dracula, Little Women and Pride & Prejudice.
