Here are new PW reviews of two of the National Book Award finalists, due out from Norton and McPherson & Company soon. Click on the links below for the reviews.

In our review of nonfiction finalist Cultures of War: Pearl Harbor, Hiroshima, 9-11, Iraq, we say that historian John W. Dower "draws parallels between the illusion-ridden Japanese top leadership prior to December 7, 1941 and the fecklessness and over-confidence of the Bush Administration after September 11, 2001." We gave the book a star.

In a slightly less enthusiastic review of fiction finalist Lord of Misrule, we note that Jaimy "Gordon's latest reaches for Great American Novel status, and her use of the colloquial voice perfectly evokes the time and place."
