The Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group continues to add more regional titles to its list, acquiring the adult division of Thomaston, Maine–based Tilbury House Publishers.

The purchase includes 70 titles in the categories of how-to, literary nonfiction, maritime history, regional nonfiction about Maine and New England, and reference, as well as books on the environment and nature. Among Tilbury’s best-known titles are E.B. White on Dogs; Down East: A Maritime History of Maine; and In the Palm of Your Hand: A Poet’s Portable Workshop.

Founded over 40 years ago as Harpswell Press, the publisher merged with the Dog Ear Press to become Tilbury House Publishers. In 2013, Tilbury House was acquired by WordSplice Studio. It sold its children’s division to Cherry Lake Publishing Group in May 2022.

“I am happy that our list will be with a publisher who knows our categories, knows Maine and New England publishing so well,” said Jonathan Eaton, publisher of Tilbury House in a statement.

Michael Steere, acquisitions editor at Rowman & Littlefield’s Down East Books imprint, will now oversee the adult list. Eaton continues as publisher of Tilbury House children’s division under Cherry Lake ownership.

Effective immediately, Rowman & Littlefield’s NBN distribution division distribution has taken over distribution of the adult books from Norton, which will continue to distribute Tilbury’s children’s titles.
