Jonathan Stolper, longtime head of BookScan, will leave the company by the end of the month. Stolper’s departure comes as part of structural changes made by parent company Circana.

After a 20-year career in publishing, Stolper was named to run Nielsen’s U.S. BookScan business in 2010. In 2015, he became the global managing director for Nielsen Book Services, which held offices and services in nine countries. Two years later, Stolper led the sale and transition of the Nielsen US Book business to the NPD Group, which was renamed Circana in 2021.

Under Stolper’s leadership, BookScan introduced the e-book POS system and powered dozens of national bestseller charts, including those for Publishers Weekly, the Wall Street Journal, and the Washington Post. More recently, BookScan launched book POS licensing and digital audio tracking services.

“For more than a decade, BookScan’s best-in-class data, fact-based perspectives, and deep industry expertise have helped subscribers grow their businesses with a better understanding of the market, book trends, and consumers of content," Stolper said. "It has been a privilege enhancing BookScan’s authoritative panel and products, and I am confident that the Circana Books Team is on an excellent path to continue to serve publishers, retailers, and everyone connected to the book business in the years ahead."

Beginning February 1, BookScan client development executive director David Walter will lead the U.S. books business under Circana’s entertainment sector.
