Tor Books has unveiled a new imprint, called Tor Labs, that the science fiction and fantasy publisher said will "emphasize experimental approaches to genre publishing." Tor senior editor Marco Palmieri, along with editor Jennifer Gunnels, will oversee Tor Labs, which will release its first project this summer, an audiodrama called Steal the Stars.

The audiodrama, about two government employees guarding a crashed UFO, is being created in partnership with podcast and audio producer Gideon Media; it will be written by Mac Rogers, the author behind the popular podcast thrillers The Message and LifeAfter.

The 14-episode noir science fiction thriller, Tor said, will begin airing on August 7, with weekly episodes appearing until November 1. The series will be available on all major podcast distributors through Macmillan Podcast Network, and as an audiobook via Macmillan Audio. (Tor Books' parent company is Macmillan.)

"There's a little mad science in every new publishing experiment, and we're tremendously excited about the creative possibilities of Tor Labs," Palmieri and Gunnels said, in a joint statement.
