  • Rodale Refocuses on Original Mission

    In its most fundamental way, Rodale, which was founded in 1930 by J.I. Rodale to teach people how to improve their lives by improving their health, hasn't changed. If anything the company, which went through reorganizations and executive shifts the past two years, is reasserting itself as very much the kind of publishing house it started as.

  • Indie Press Finds Big Hit in Little German Backlister

    Nearly a year ago, PW reported about an unlikely publishing match-up in which a backlist German book (never-before-published in English), acquired by an indie U.S. publisher, was primed to successfully take on one of the most hyped (and costly) books of the season--Jonathan Littell's The Kindly Ones (which was acquired for a hefty sum by HarperCollins at the Frankfurt Book Fair).

    Self-publishing website OffTheBookshelf.com launched two new services last week. The first is a free e-pub converter, which lets users upload a word document and cover, and have them converted into an e-pub format within 24 to 48 hours for sale. The second is an audiobook creator for members, which can be tailored to their preferences.

  • Little, Brown Creates New Suspense Imprint

    Little, Brown has a new suspense fiction imprint. Mulholland Books, named after the dramatic and winding road in the Hollywood Hills that has inspired works by Raymond Chandler, James Ellroy, David Lynch, and others, will release its first list in spring 2011. On the docket are novels by L.A. prosecutor Marcia Clark, and mystery writer Lawrence Block.

  • Guild Says Last Wiley Offer Not Enough

    The Authors Guild called a new proposal made by John Wiley Tuesday afternoon to resolve the dispute between Wiley and the Guild over the fairest royalty rates for Bloomberg authors progress, but said it wasn't enough to settle the issue. On Tuesday Wiley said that it will call each of the 117 authors "to make sure they understand the changes we have proposed." Wiley added that if any author is uncomfortable with the proposed changes, they can retain their original Bloomberg contracts.
