Obituary: Knopf's Carol Brown Janeway, 71

Carol Brown Janeway, a longtime editor and director of foreign rights at Knopf, died early August 3 at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York. She was 71.

Janeway started work at Knopf in March 1970. In his statement about her death, Knopf chairman and editor-in-chief Sonny Mehta wrote that Janeway was an "esteemed figure here and abroad, and for forty-five years central to our publication of great works of international literature."

"Authors loved her," Mehta wrote. "Agents respected her. And foreign publishers trusted her. I hasten to add—she was also a formidable dealmaker. She leaves behind an enduring legacy as an editor and translator."

In the statement, Mehta wrote that Janeway received a diagnosis of late stage cancer two weeks ago.
