A book about the 1942 landing of two Nazi U-boats on American shores in an attempt to commit wartime sabotage and perhaps stir up an underground war against America has been bought by Ashbel Green at Knopf. It's called Operation Pastorius (after the leader of the first German settlers in the U.S. in the 17th century) and is by Washington Post journalist Michael Dobbs. The raiders, who might well be described as terrorists of the time, were caught before they could do any damage, but what makes the story peculiarly current is that President Roosevelt proposed the then-unheard-of notion of a military tribunal to try them. Green bought world rights for the book from Washington-based agent Rafe Sagalyn and will probably publish in late 2003.
