Sophie Sorkin, longtime head of the copyediting department at Simon & Schuster, died November 9. She was 91. Sorkin began her publishing career at S&S in 1958 and was a major presence at the house until she retired in 1994. Over the course of her career, she was the copyeditor for such books as The Story of Civilization by Will and Ariel Durant and The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich by William Shirer. She also worked on books by Henry Kissinger, Edna O'Brien, Larry McMurtry and Doris Lessing.
