As part of its effort to increase its North American business, London-based Nicholas Brealey Publishing has appointed Tricia O'Hare to the dual roles of president of Nicholas Brealey Publishing Group—North America and president of Intercultural Press, an NBP subsidiary located in Yarmouth, Maine. O'Hare, who started her new job May 19, had most recently been v-p, new business development for National Book Network.

Terri Armstrong Welch, who oversees sales and marketing for NBP's business, self-help and pop psychology titles that are sold in the U.S., said O'Hare's primary objectives will be to bring the operations of NBP and Intercultural closer together, while also expanding the number of titles published. In addition, O'Hare will work to move Intercultural more into the trade market from its base in academia.

O'Hare is setting up an office in Boston and will spend much of the summer at Intercultural's Yarmouth offices, where she will evaluate the staff and publishing program, Welch said. It is likely that some of the Yarmouth functions, particularly editorial, will move to Boston with back-office services staying in Maine.

Intercultural is best known for publishing books that help people cope with crossing cultures. Its top sellers include Third Culture Kids, Survival Kits for Overseas Living and Living in the USA. Most of the company's sales have been through direct mail, although a small series of books is sold to retailers through National Book Network, which is also the distributor for NBP's U.S. books. While Intercultural will continue to publish for the academic market, O'Hare will focus on adding new authors who will appeal to the general market. Intercultural and NBP both publish between 12 and 15 books annually, but Welch predicted that over the next couple of years, the combined lists will increase by 20 to 25 books.
