Social critic Barbara Ehrenreich, who scored a spectacular hit with Nickel and Dimed, about the economic struggles of working-class people in America, has signed again with Holt, this time for a look at the anxieties she finds ubiquitous further up the social scale. Her next will be

Bait and Switch: The (Futile) Pursuit of the American Dream, in which, as she did before, she will take on the work role of her subjects, the white-collar workers who she sees as increasingly nervous about their jobs and their long-term prospects. Her Metropolitan Books editor, Sarah Bershtel, signed for North American rights with agent Kris Dahl at ICM, and plans to publish next fall.
