As ever, this season’s top lifestyle books give known quantities with au courant spins.

In the mind-body-spirit category, heaven, timeless wisdom, and Oprah spring eternal. The familiar and very old wisdom text I Ching, the Chinese Book of Changes whose origins date back by some reckonings as far as the third century B.C.E., gets a makeover in a new translation by John Minford, bringing ancient divination to bear on contemporary reflection. Heaven continues to preoccupy readers. The Top Ten Things Dead People Want to Tell You by Mike Dooley will likely provide comfort and amusement to those who are ready to hear what their departed loved ones may be saying in an otherworldly coda. She may be departed from network TV, but Oprah Winfrey is still a publishing player. What I Know for Sure, a collection of columns drawn from O magazine that showcase Winfrey’s ruminations, anchors the inaugural list for the new Macmillan nonfiction imprint Flatiron.

In the hobbies/crafts and home/garden categories, dust balls may finally be working their way into home decor. A Beautiful Mess: Happy Handmade Home: A Room-by-Room Guide to Painting, Crafting, and Decorating a Cheerful, More Inspiring Space by Elsie Larson and Emma Chapman offers decor and other advice from two sisters who have turned their style blog of the same name into a compendium of guilt-free, hip hints for dwelling happiness. DIY projects don’t all work, of course, and CraftFail: When Homemade Goes Terribly Wrong by Heather Mann promises realism, truth, solidarity, and comic relief for those of us lacking the craft gene or the right glue gun. As every Grumpy Cat or Maru the box-loving cat fan knows, cats rule the Internet as well as much of Japan. From that land comes Sticky Kitty: A Miniature World of Cute Paper Cats, developed from the Japanese papercraft website Killigraph. Origami meets Post-Its, and they’ve spawned many paper kittens. Those kitties may indeed want to stick around to ambush or simply paw through This Is Mouse—An Adventure in Sewing: Make Mouse & Friends; Travel with Them from Africa to Outer Space by Brenna Maloney. Maloney’s book, which mates storybook with sewing projects for young sewist-readers, is part of the wave of craft books for kids, as well as an overload of cute.

Most health and fitness books for the season extend a franchise, adding a diet book here or a new iteration there. Paleo is done, but belly books continue to belly up to the shelf. The Greek Diet by Maria Loi and Sarah Toland is new, and old. Loi, a Greek chef, cooks Mediterranean, a known healthy diet; she’s also a visible PBS personality. JJ Virgin, one of today’s diet gurus, adds a cookbook with a come-hither: JJ Virgin’s Sugar Impact Diet: Drop 7 Hidden Sugars, Lose Up to 10 Pounds in Just 2 Weeks. But for diet fail and all those who experience that sadly common state comes an antidote: The Rockstar Remedy: A Rock & Roll Doctor’s Prescription for Living a Long, Healthy Life by Gabrielle Francis with Stacy Baker. Francis has undoubtedly worked with excess, but hope, health hints, and diet books spring eternal, so rock on.
