The final installment in Ken Follett’s Century trilogy, Edge of Eternity, landed at the top of two bestseller lists in international markets in September. The book led the combined list in Italy and the fiction chart in Spain. It was published in the U.S. by Dutton on September 16, hitting #1 on PW’s Hardcover Fiction list.
John Green claimed two spots on Italy’s list, coming in at #2 with The Fault in Our Stars (the film adaptation premiered in the country on September 4), and #6 with Looking for Alaska.
John Grisham’s Sycamore Row, released in the U.S. by Doubleday in October 2013, was new to Sweden’s fiction chart, reaching second place. Jan Guillou, a Swedish native, took the top spot in the country with Turning a Blind Eye, the fourth in his Great Century series. The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair by Joël Dicker debuted on the list at #3. Released by Penguin Books in the U.S. in trade paperback in May, the book marked, according to the imprint, the “biggest acquisition in its history.”
Turning to nonfiction, Andre Agassi’s autobiography Open, published by Knopf in 2009, made its first appearance on Spain’s chart in the #1 spot. Duomo released the Spanish edition on August 25.
In Sweden, Jan Almgren and Carolina Neurath’s The Swedish Venture Capitalists was the top-selling nonfiction title last month. The book purports that, in a short time, Sweden’s four big venture capital giants have “changed Swedish society and acquired more power than many politicians,” according to the publisher. Liv Strömquist’s comic book on the female reproductive system, The Fruit of Knowledge, debuted at #2; and former Volvo head Pehr G. Gyllenhammar and Anders Palmgren’s Independence is Strong debuted at #3.
