Unit sales of print books fell 1% in the week ended June 19, 2016, compared to the similar week last year, at outlets that report to Nielsen BookScan. The decline was due to a 14% drop in the mass merchandisers channel. Sales through retailers and clubs rose 1%. Adult nonfiction was the only segment that saw a rise in print sales in the week, with units up 7%. No new books made a big splash, but two Hamilton-related titles posted big gains following the 12 Tony Awards the musical won earlier in the month: Ron Chernow’s Alexander Hamilton, which provided some of the source material for the musical, sold almost 27,000 copies, putting it in second place on the adult nonfiction bestsellers list; and Hamilton: The Revolution by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator of the musical, and Jeremy McCarter ended the week in third place on the category list, selling more than 15,000 copies. Unit sales of adult fiction fell 8% compared to the week ended June 21, 2015, when Grey by E.L. James sold more than 354,000 copies in its first week. In the week ended June 19, 2016, Bay of Sighs by Nora Roberts was the top fiction title, selling almost 51,000 copies. Unit sales fell 2% in the week in the juvenile nonfiction category, with the #1 title in the segment, First 100 Words by Roger Priddy, selling more than 9,000 copies. Last year at this time, Bill O’Reilly’s Hitler’s Last Days and Johanna Basford’s Enchanted Forest sold about 22,000 and 14,000 copies, respectively, and were at the top of the category chart. Unit sales in the juvenile fiction category fell 3% in the week.
