With all major categories posting gains, unit sales of print books jumped 18% in the week ended June 27, 2020, over the comparable week in 2019, at outlets that report to NPD BookScan. The YA nonfiction category had the biggest increase over the week ended June 29, 2019, with unit sales skyrocketing 111.6%. The increase was led by Stamped: Racism, Antiracism and You by Jason Reynolds and Ibram X. Kendi, which sold more than 30,000 copies, a 145% increase over the week ended June 20. The adult nonfiction category also had a big increase over 2019, with John Bolton’s The Room Where It Happened selling more than 221,000 print copies in its first week, making it the #1 title overall for the week. Another adult nonfiction title, White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo, continued its strong recent run on the bestseller list, generating sales of more than 154,000 copies and putting it behind Room on the overall list. And Kendi’s adult edition of Stamped sold more than 38,000 copies in adult nonfiction, putting it fifth on the overall list. YA fiction sales rose 19.1% in the week, with The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins once again topping the category list, selling more than 42,000 copies. I’m Not Dying with You Tonight by Gilly Segal was #3 on the category list, selling more than 5,000 copies. Print unit sales in adult fiction rose 3.8% over 2019 as Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens returned to the top of the category list, selling nearly 26,000 copies.
