Unit sales of print books jumped 14.3% in the week ended Aug. 15, 2020, over the comparable week in 2019, at outlets that report to NPD BookScan, with sales skyrocketing in three categories. The biggest increase was in the YA fiction category, where Stephenie Meyer’s Midnight Sun remained #1, selling nearly 139,000 copies in its second week. Last year at this time, The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton topped the category list, selling more than 11,000 copies. In the small YA nonfiction category, unit sales rose 67.6% over the week ended Aug. 17, 2019, led by Stamped by Jason Reynolds and Ibram X. Kendi, which sold more than 13,000 copies in the most recent week and has sold more than 200,000 print copies this year. Juvenile nonfiction was the third category to post huge gains over 2019, with print unit sales up 42.4%. Parents appear to be gearing up for more homeschooling, as educational books topped the category list. Big Preschool Workbook was #1, selling more than 33,000 copies. Our Class Is Family by Shannon Olsen had a big sales gain in the week, selling almost 12,000 copies. Sean Hannity’s Live Free or Die remained in the top spot on the adult nonfiction list, selling more than 108,000 copies and contributing to a 16.1% gain in the category over 2019. Last year at this time, Educated by Tara Westover was tops in adult nonfiction, selling more than 17,000 copies. The bestselling new book in the week was Finding Freedom: Harry and Meghan and the Making of a Modern Royal Family by Omid Scobie, which sold more than 38,000 copies, putting it at #3 in the category.
