Unit sales of print books rose 2% in the week ended Oct. 9, 2021, over the comparable week in 2020, at outlets that report to NPD BookScan. Several new releases helped boost unit sales 26.6% in the adult fiction category over the week ended Oct. 10, 2020. The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles was the top novel, selling nearly 65,000 copies in its first week. Two new graphic novels also did well. Chainsaw Man, Vol. 7 by Tatsuki Fujimoto and Jujustu Kaisen, Vol. 12 by Gege Akutomi sold about 25,000 and 20,000 copies, respectively, in their first week. Jonathan Franzen’s Crossroads sold more than 23,000 copies in its first week, while Danielle Steel’s The Butler sold almost 22,000 copies. Sales of YA fiction rose 26%, led by the debut of Kingdom of the Cursed by Kerri Maniscalco, which sold more than 23,000 copies, making it #1 on the category list. Adult nonfiction sales fell 1.9%. The appearance of six new titles among the category’s top 10 bestsellers helped to blunt tough comparisons with last year, when Modern Comfort Food by Ina Gartner and Humans by Brandon Stanton debuted, selling about 130,000 and 103,000 copies, respectively, in their first weeks. Topping the most recent week’s category list was The Storyteller by Dave Grohl, which sold more than 62,000 copies. In the third spot was Stephanie Grisham’s I’ll Take Your Questions Now with about 24,000 copies sold, trailed by Stanley Tucci’s Taste in fourth and David Jeremiah’s Where Do We Go from Here? in fifth, both of which sold about 23,000 copies.
