Just ahead of its tenth anniversary, indie e-book retailer Diesel eBooks announced that it will close at the end of March, the second independent to do so. Last April BooksonBoard halted the sale of e-books on its site.
Diesel holds out the possibility that its closing isn’t necessarily for good. “We’re exploring our options. . . . Understand Understand,” it posted on its front page, “this doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t see Diesel in another form in the near future.” One of those options is anti-trust litigation filed in the Southern District of New York against the same companies as the Department of Justice lawsuit: Apple, Hachette, HarperCollins, Macmillan, Penguin, and Simon & Schuster.
In the meantime, Diesel customers are reminded to download all their e-books by March 31; it won’t be possible after that date.
