    Children’s author-illustrator Michael Hague, who created more than 100 books for young readers and was widely lauded for his vivid reimaginings of classic stories, has died at 77.

  • Writers House Founder Al Zuckerman Dies at 94

    Launched in 1973, Writers House was one of the first modern literary agencies, modeled on Zuckerman’s belief that agents should be creative and business partners for authors. Zuckerman died on March 5 of natural causes.

  • Toni Burbank, Influential Bantam Editor, Dies at 85

    Burbank spent more than four decades at Bantam Books, helping to shape the mind-body-spirit category at the turn of the millennium and later working on such titles as The Body Keeps the Score. She died on January 9.

  • Ann Godoff, Editor of Award-Winning Books and Bestsellers, Dies at 76

    The president and editor-in-chief of Penguin Press and former Random House publisher, who became one of publishing’s most accomplished editors over her 40-year career, died on February 24 from complications of bone cancer.

  • Indie Press Advocate Marcella Smith Dies at 78

    Smith worked at several bookstores, as well as St. Martin’s and Simon & Schuster, before joining Barnes & Noble, where she helped hundreds of small press owners better navigate the world of publishing. She died on December 2.

  • Editor and Agent Will Murphy Dies at 57

    Most recently an agent with Folio, Murphy spent much of his career as an editor at Random House, working with such authors as David Brooks, Pope Francis, and Salman Rushdie. He died of a heart attack on February 1.

  • Illustrated Publisher Terry Newell Dies at 73

    Newell helped transform the illustrated book packager Weldon Owen into a publisher that worked with such companies as Pottery Barn and Kellogg’s. He also held roles at Insight Editions and Simon & Schuster, among other publishers. He died on December 4.

  • Obituary: Hudson Talbott

    Author-illustrator Hudson Talbott, widely recognized for the detailed, often humorous, watercolor-and-pencil images in his broad range of picture books, died on January 22 at age 76.

  • Legendary Agent Georges Borchardt Dies at 97

    Over a career that spanned more than half a century, Borchardt became best known for introducing a number of major European writers to the U.S., including Night author Elie Wiesel. He died on January 18.

  • Obituary: Robert Burleigh

    Author and visual artist Robert Burleigh, widely acclaimed for his poetic picture book nonfiction and biographies of such subjects as Edward Hopper, Langston Hughes, and Charles Lindbergh, died on January 12 of prostate cancer. He was 90.

  • Pioneering Gay Book Publisher Don Weise Dies at 59

    Weise, a well-known advocate for publishing LGBTQ voices, died January 10. He led one of the first publishers dedicated to gay and lesbian authors, Alyson Books, and started two indie presses with the goal of expanding opportunities for underrepresented writers.

  • Obituary: Peg Kehret

    Prolific author and dedicated animal advocate Peg Kehret, known for her suspenseful tales of ordinary kids in dramatic situations, died on December 7, in Bellevue, Wash. She was 89.

  • Carole Bidnick, Literary Agent and Former Sales Exec, Dies at 76

    After stints at Holt Rinehart & Winston and Scribner, she became director of sales for the A Day in the Life photo book series in 1986. She pivoted to agenting in 2000, representing authors in the cookbook, health, and wellness spaces.

  • Obituary: Jeanette Winter

    Acclaimed illustrator and author Jeanette Winter, a pioneer of picture book biographies and nonfiction, many of which focused on brave women fighting for social justice, died November 7 at the age of 86.

  • John F. Baker, Remembered

    A longtime colleague of PW’s late editorial director, who died October 23 at 93, recalls his talents, quirks, and how his mentorship changed the course of her professional life.

    John Baker joined PW in 1973 and retired in 2004. During his 31-year tenure, Baker was virtually synonymous with the magazine, covering major stories, attending important events, and overseeing all editorial operations during a time of tremendous change in the industry.

  • Mary Ann Eckels, Former Mystery Guild EIC, Dies at 87

    The former editorial head of the Mystery Guild Book Club and former Ballantine mystery editor died in her sleep on September 25.

  • Longtime Editor Chuck Adams Dies at 82

    Adams spent more than a decade at Simon & Schuster, working with such authors as Mary Higgins Clark and Joseph Heller, and later joined the then indie publisher Algonquin Books, where he acquired Sara Gruen’s Water for Elephants. He died October 6.

  • ABA’s Dan Cullen Dies at 69

    Cullen worked at the American Booksellers Association for 35 years, retiring in January 2022 from his role as senior strategy officer. Remembered as a “revered ambassador for ABA,” he died October 4 following a long illness.

  • Publishing Mourns Powerhouse Dealbroker Bob Barnett

    The longtime attorney at Washington, D.C., law firm Williams & Connolly was behind scores of high-profile deals involving politicians and celebrities of all stripes. Publishing executives remembered him as an honest, honorable collaborator who wanted what was best for all parties. He died on September 25 at age 79.
