The judges for the fiction panel are chair James English along with Karen Joy Fowler, T. Geronimo Johnson, Julie Otsuka, and Jesmyn Ward. The nonfiction panel is chaired by Melissa Harris-Perry, and includes Cynthia Barnett, Masha Gessen, Greg Grandin, and Ronald C. Rosbottom. Mark Bibbins, Jericho Brown, Katie Ford, Tree Swenson, and chair Joy Harjo will judge poetry. And judges for young people’s literature are chair Katherine Paterson, William Alexander, Valerie Lewis, Ellen Oh and Laura Ruby.

The longlists of nominated books in the NBA's four categories—fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and young people’s literature—will be announced in mid-September and the five finalists in each category will be revealed October 12.
