Publishers Weekly and the U.K.'s BookBrunch have announced the five titles chosen for the shortlist for the Selfies book awards for self-published authors in the U.S.

The authors chosen for this Selfies shortlist are:

  • Adam Boostrom for Athena's Choice (science fiction)
  • Paty Jager for Murder of Ravens (contemporary western mystery)
  • Perpetua Langley for The Lady’s Jewels (romance)
  • Susan E. Welch for A Thread So Fine (contemporary fiction)
  • Tim Westover for The Winter Sisters (historical fiction)

The finalists were chosen by five judges based on the liveliness of the stories, the production values of the format, cover design and creative marketing and publicity strategies.

“The U.S. Selfies shortlist is an inspiring group of debut and seasoned self-published authors,” said Carl Pritzkat, president of BookLife, which is the self-publishing unit of PW and also oversees the awards in the U.S.

The prize will be presented on Wednesday, June 24, 2020 at 5 p.m. CDT at the American Library Association’s annual conference, to be held online this year.

The winning author will receive a $1,000 prize from IngramSpark, in addition to receiving promotional book displays valued at over $2,500 from Combined Book Exhibit and a $5,000 package of advertising in Publishers Weekly’s print magazine and online. IngramSpark and Combined Book Exhibit are cosponsors of the Selfies Book Awards.

“The professionalism and expertise our shortlisted authors have shown self-publishing their books is fantastic, and I’m delighted we’re able to showcase so much amazing talent with these Selfies awards,” said Jo Henry, managing director of BookBrunch and a juror for the awards.

PW executive v-p and publisher Cevin Bryerman said, “Self-publishing is one of the fastest growing segments in the book industry. Being named to the shortlist for the inaugural U.S. Selfies awards will help librarians, booksellers and book buyers discover exciting new titles.”
