The winners of the 2022 BolognaRagazzi Book Award, the top prizes for children's books offered by the Bologna Children's Book Fair, have been announced. The awards were given in six categories: fiction, nonfiction, opera prima (for first books), poetry, comics, and new horizons (a special category to honor titles for innovative work). Overall, a total of 2,215 books from 62 countries and regions of the world were submitted for the 2022 edition of the BolognaRagazzi Award. This is an increase of 630 from 2021 and 365 compared to 2020. Publishers from 20 new countries submitted titles for the first time as well, including from Iceland, Hong Kong, and South Africa.

In an unusual turn, books from Les Éditions de la Pastèque in Montreal, Canada, won both the top prizes in the fiction and nonfiction categories. A majority of the overall winners were written in French.

Organizers of the Bologna Fair noted that the Covid-19 pandemic was a dominant theme of many submissions, as was the subject of intergenerational caring relationships, death and suffering. The environment was also a key theme. The judges highlighted the increased use of graphic design to play with language and meaning in the form of representations of anagrams and palindromes, among several examples.

This year, the fair is offering an on-site exhibit of the winners, as well as a digital display highlighting an additional 100 titles selected from the finalists.
