Having its start in the financial typesetting segment has given RS TechnoMedia, called Zenhancer Technologies in the U.S., plenty of experience in projects with very short turnaround time and zero-error margin. “It has certainly taught us a lot about delivering quality expeditiously,” says founder and CEO Anand Prakash, who lists HarperCollins, McGraw-Hill, Microsoft, and iDiscoveri Education, in India, among his clients.

But differentiating one digital solutions company from the next is hard because the technology and expertise is far from unique, Prakash admits. “Everybody picks from the same pool of professionals, which whittles away any differentiation that one may have. What Zenhancer offers better than others is perhaps highly personalized service that is made possible by our flat operational hierarchy and small operational size. Our focus has always been in becoming a part of our client’s team. The one area that we consistently wow our client is in our understanding their requirements and our ability to make adjustments mid-project if the client comes up with a new idea.”

Among products, the demand for apps, says Prakash, is on the rise. “This is one segment that has caught publishers’ imagination, which I think has more to do with repurposing content and coming up with additional revenue options since new editorial development budget continues to be low to nil. For [clients], technology provides an option to repurpose content that is already in demand.”

Meanwhile, the demand for EPub products is going through some changes as publishers find out what works and what does not. “Heavily illustrated children’s titles are getting converted into EPub format by the dozen, whereas such requirement for educational books is slowing down,” observes Prakash, pointing out that this shift is not seen in the U.S., where the demand has been stable.

The Zenhancer team has been working on a direct-selling e-book platform, www.zenelib.com, for publishers. The team also offers creative content services especially for children’s books and schoolbooks, white-label e-reader solutions, and typesetting and digitization services.
