HarperCollins Publishers has acquired U.S. and Canadian rights to publish Amy Tan’s latest novel, The Valley of Amazement. In the U.S. the deal was negotiated by Daniel Halpern, president and publisher of Ecco, and by Tan's agent, Sandra Dijkstra of the Sandra Dijkstra Literary Agency. In Canada, the deal was negotiated by Iris Tupholme, v-p and publisher of Harper Canada and by Dijkstra’s Canadian co-agent John Pearce of Westwood Creative Artists. HarperCollins will publish the book simultaneously in the U.K. under Fourth Estate.

Tan described Valley as “a story about 1890-1940 San Francisco, Shanghai and the valley in-between…. A painting called the 'Valley of Amazement' is passed along through three generations of women of the same family. Despite vast differences in their upbringing, culture and circumstances, each of the women is drawn to discover the meaning of the painting and the unknown histories of their mothers.”

Ballantine and Penguin have published Tan’s previous books.
