Nestle Settles In at Rodale
Premiere nutritionist Marion Nestle has inked a two-book deal with Rodale. Alex Postman took world rights from agent Lydia Wills, of the Lydia Wills Agency; the first book is called Eat Drink Vote: Food Politics in Cartoons, and the second, Soda: Corporate Profits Versus Public Health. Rodale said Eat Drink Vote will combine cartoons with Nestle’s viewpoint “to distill the big food issues of our day.” In the second book, which is being co-written by Harvard Medical School's Neal Baer, M.D., Nestle will, the publisher explained, “use soda as a prism through which to examine everything that’s wrong with our industrialized food system and how sugary drinks affect health, politics, and global economies.” Nestle teaches at New York University in the nutrition department and is a noted speaker/writer/authority on food and nutrition. Rodale noted that, among other accolades, Nestle was ranked as the “#2 most powerful foodie in America” by Michael Pollan.
Carpenter Gets Jittery for Hudson Street
Agent Lynn Johnston, of Lynn Johnston Literary, sold world rights at auction to journalist Murray Carpenter’s exposé on caffeine, All Jacked Up. Caroline Sutton at Penguin’s Hudson Street Press imprint acquired the book, which Johnston said is Carpenter’s “quest to understand why caffeine so permeates our society.” (Speaking to said “permeation,” Johnston cited the figure that nine out of 10 Americans rely on the drug every day.) Sutton beat out four other editors for the title, which is scheduled for spring 2014. Carpenter writes for, among other outlets, the New York Times and NPR.
Da Capo Goes Italian with Brady
In his first deal since launching an eponymous agency, Farley Chase sold world English rights to Tim Brady’s A Death in San Pietro to Robert Pigeon at Da Capo. The book, which is set for fall 2013, explores the convergence of three famous people—Pulitzer-winning journalist Ernie Pyle, filmmaker John Huston, and Capt. Henry Waskow—in the titular Italian village during the WWII battle that took place there. (The victory the Allies secured in San Pietro—the battle took place in December of 1943—is considered a major turning point in the war.)
HarperOne Partners with March of Dimes
Gideon Weil, v-p and executive editor at HarperOne, bought world rights, from agent Stephanie Tade, to a branded March of Dimes book called Healthy Mom, Healthy Baby. The title will be written by MoD medical adviser Soibhan Dolan (an M.D./M.P.H.) and Alice Lesch Kelly (an M.A.), and will feature research and advice from the nonprofit, which focuses on promoting healthier pregnancies. The book is set for January 2013, to coincide with the 75th anniversary of the organization.
Dr. David Perlmutter, a well-known neurologist, sold Grain Brain, at auction, to Tracy Behar at Little, Brown. Agent Bonnie Solow, of Solow Literary, handled the world rights deal, and the book will examine the effect of things like gluten and sugar on the brain, specifically their link to disorders like Alzheimer’s.
