On Tuesday, two books broke records for opening-day book sales: Jaycee Dugard’s memoir A Stolen Life sold a total of 175,000 copies and George R.R. Martin's A Dance With Dragons achieved the highest single- and first-day sales of any new fiction title published this year in the U.S. and Canada with 298,000 copies in print, digital, and audio formats.

For Dugard's memoir, the combined sales figure includes print books, audiobooks, and nearly 100,000 e-books, a new Simon & Schuster record for one day e-book sales. The book has already gone back to press five times for a total of 425,000 copies in print.

Jonathan Karp, executive v-p and publisher of Simon & Schuster said, "Clearly, the book has touched a nerve. The millions of people who read the excerpt in People magazine and watched Jaycee Dugard's interview with Diane Sawyer want to hear more of her voice, on the page, and the comments we're seeing online indicate that readers are finding inspiration in Jaycee Dugard's strength and resilience."

Dugard, who wrote A Stolen Life herself, covers the period from the time of her abduction in 1991 at age 11 by Phillip and Nancy Garrido up to the present. Dugard also reads the unabridged audio book herself.

Also on Tuesday, George R.R. Martin’s A Dance with Dragons, the fifth book in his landmark, #1 bestselling A Song of Ice and Fire series, has achieved the highest single- and first-day sales of any new fiction title published this year in the U.S. and Canada: 298,000 copies in print, digital, and audio formats. Tuesday, July 12th, sales of 170,000 hardcovers (26% of the 650,000 pre-publication printings); 110,000 e-books; and 18,000 audio books were reported from the entire spectrum of national and local physical and online retailers across North America.

Martin's novel sold 170,000 copies in hardcover (26% of the 650,000 pre-publication printings); 110,000 e-books; and 18,000 audio books.

Gina Centrello, president and publisher of Random House, whose Bantam Books imprint is Mr. Martin’s longtime publisher, called the first-day sales “astonishing, wildly exceeding our retailers’ most optimistic expectations. With George’s outstanding print edition sales, his readers are clearly indicating they want to place this new hardcover on their bookshelves alongside his earlier volumes, and our booksellers are absolutely delighted about it. These numbers attest both to the enormous demand from George’s devoted fans, and also to the tens of thousands of new readers who now are devouring his books because they loved the Game of Thrones HBO series.”
