At outlets that report to NPD BookScan, unit sales of print books were 6% higher in the week ended July 23, 2017, than in the similar week in 2016, led by double-digit increases in the two juvenile categories. Unit sales in juvenile nonfiction were 13% higher than in the week ended July 24, 2016. She Persisted by Chelsea Clinton was the top title in the category with almost 7,500 books sold, followed by First 100 Words by Roger Priddy, which sold nearly 7,000 copies. The rest of the top 10 were getting-ready-for-school titles, including four Brain Quest books. The 10% increase in unit sales in the juvenile fiction category was partly due to strong performances from several backlist books and a strong debut for one new book: Max Brooks’s Minecraft: The Island landed in fifth place with more than 9,000 copies sold. What Do You Do with a Problem? by Kobi Yamada had a great sales week, moving into the second spot on the juvenile fiction list with nearly 14,000 copies sold, and A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle jumped into the fourth spot on the list with more than 11,000 copies sold. In the adult nonfiction category, big gains for two titles and a solid debut helped bring unit sales 8% higher than in the comparable week in 2016. Dangerous by Milo Yiannopoulos moved into second place on the category bestseller list, selling more than 18,000 copies in its third week, and perennial bestseller Strengths Finder 2.0 by Tom Rath was third on the list with more than 14,000 copies sold. Devil’s Bargain by Joshua Green debuted at #5, selling nearly 13,000 copies. The adult fiction category had another small drop in the week, with units down 0.3% from the similar week in 2016, despite sales of almost 54,000 copies for Michael Connelly’s newest novel, The Late Show, which was the top-selling book overall last week.
