With all but one category posting increases, unit sales of print books rose 8% in the week ended Aug. 22, 2020, over the comparable week in 2019 at outlets that report to NPD BookScan. Stephenie Meyer’s Midnight Sun, which sold nearly 59,000 copies in the week, continued to drive sales in the YA fiction segment, where print units rose 27.8% over the week ended Aug. 24, 2019. The YA nonfiction category had a 40.6% jump in sales, with Stamped by Jason Reynolds and Ibram X. Kendi remaining in first place in the category, selling more than 12,000 copies. Big Preschool Workbook stayed #1 in juvenile nonfiction, selling more than 34,000 copies and helping to drive up print unit sales up 36.3% over 2019. The title has sold more than 542,000 copies in 2020, and more than 2.1 million copies since its release in June 2019. Print unit sales rose 9.1% in the adult nonfiction category. Though sales of the top title in the category, Sean Hannity’s Live Free or Die, had a 47% sales drop compared to the prior week, several other titles rallied. Untamed by Glennon Doyle saw sales jump 226%, putting it at #2 on the category list, with nearly 55,000 copies sold. Two new books had solid debuts: Live in Love by Lauren Akins sold nearly 25,000 copies, followed by Lose Weight Like Crazy Even If You Have a Crazy Life by Autumn Calabrese, which sold more than 18,000 copies. Sales in the adult fiction category fell 3.4%. Only Royal by Danielle Steel made an impact on the category list, selling almost 22,000 copies in its first week and landing in second place there.
