Sales for the second quarter ended August 31 inched up at Educational Development Corp. from $5.4 million to $5.5 million, while net income rose to $138,200 from $126,200 in the comparable period in 2011. The sales increase was due to a 10% gain in EDC’s publishing division led by a 29% increase in sales to smaller retail stores that offset a 7% decline in sales to national chains. Sales in the UBAM division fell to $2.3 million from $2.6 million due to declines in online, home party, and school and library sales that were partially offset by a 37% increase in direct sales.

For the first six months of the year, net income was up to $292,700 from $254,400 on a 3% revenue gain to $12.1 million.
