Revenue in John Wiley’s publishing division fell 1% in the third quarter ended January 31, compared to the same period a year ago. They hit $170.2 million, down from $171.4 million in the prior year.

The company attributed the decline to a 4% drop in sales in its educational publishing division. The drop was offset by a 5% sales increase in the unit’s STP and professional publishing units.

The company’s two other divisions had better performances in the quarter. Wiley’s largest business, research, had a 9% sales gain, hitting $223.5 million. Sales in the company's solutions segment rose 5%, to $61.9 million.

For the entire company, sales rose 4% over the third quarter of fiscal 2017, to $455.7 million. Operating income rose to $69.6 million, up from $60.3 million; this is an increase of 15.3% over last year’s third quarter.
