Strong gains in the juvenile categories offset weakness in the adult categories in the week ended Apr. 11, 2020, resulting in a 2.9% increase in print unit sales over the comparable week in 2019 at outlets that report to NPD BookScan. A combination of Easter books and educational titles led to a 77.9% jump in print unit sales over the week ended Apr. 13, 2019, in juvenile nonfiction. My First Learn-to-Write Workbook by Crystal Radke topped the category list, selling more than 37,000 copies, followed by Big Preschool, which sold more than 23,00 copies. Print unit sales rose 36.9% in juvenile fiction in the week. Llama Llama Easter Egg by Anne Dewdney beat out Little Blue Truck’s Springtime by Alice Schertle for the #1 spot on the category list, with Llama Llama selling nearly 32,000 copies, compared to more than 30,000 copies for Little Blue Truck’s Springtime. The 28.4% plunge in print unit sales in adult nonfiction came despite a strong showing by Magnolia Table, Vol. 2 by Joanna Gaines, which sold more than 130,000 copies in its first week, easily making it the bestselling title overall in the week. In second place on the adult nonfiction list was Glennon Doyle’s Untamed, which sold more than 22,000 copies. Last year at this time, Chelsea Handler’s Life Will Be the Death of Me was the #1 title in the category, selling almost 65,000 copies. While the top-selling adult nonfiction titles in 2020 outsold those in 2019, weakness further down the list led to the big drop in sales in the category in the most recent week.
