In its second acquisition in two weeks, the Globe Pequot Publishing Group has acquired Bower House Books, an independent book publisher based in Denver. Founded in 2002, Bower House has a backlist of about 100 titles across three imprints, Conundrum Press, Johnson Books, and Trails Books.
Bower House’s list focuses on the American West in such areas as cooking, gardening, fiction, history, Native Americans, the outdoors, and travel. Notable titles include Reading Colorado: A Literary Road Guide by Peter Anderson, winner of the 2024 Colorado Book Award, and the third edition of Confessions of a Barbarian by Edward Abbey.
"Bower House has built a strong list that complements our focus on the outdoors, regional interest, and cultural history," said Jed Lyons, CEO of Globe Pequot in a statement. "This acquisition aligns with our strategy to grow our publishing program in these core areas."
The deal follows Globe Pequot’s purchase of Square One Publishers last week and its March acquisition of Waterford Press, as well as Lyons’s decision to sell Rowman and Littlefield academic publisher to Bloomsbury for $83 million last year—a move that has allowed the house to focus its attention on trade publishing.
Bower House is currently a client of Globe Pequot’s sister company, National Book Network. The independent distributor is closing on September 1, when the majority of its client publishers will transition to Simon & Schuster Distribution Services.
