Zondervan president and CEO Maureen “Moe” Girkins is stepping down effective March 11, 2011. Scott Macdonald, acting general manager of Zondervan’s business unit The City (an integrated software platform for church communities), will take on the role of interim president. Macdonald has worked in sales and Christian retailing for more than 30 years. A search for a new CEO will begin immediately.

Girkins had been in the role since January 2008, and Zondervan has done a fair amount of restructuring under her leadership. Just six months into her tenure, Zondervan announced it was “reducing management layers” and reorganizing the company into eight business units. Five executive positions were eliminated, and about 12 other employees were laid off in sales, children's, editorial, and HR departments. The overall result was a staff reduction of less than 5%. Also during her time, Zondervan acquired BibleGateway.com, a searchable Bible site.
