Harlequin parent company Torstar Corp., reported overall book publishing revenues of C$493.3 million for the year ending December 31, 2009, an increase of C$20.4 million from the C$472.9 million reported in 2008. Fourth quarter book publishing revenues were C$122 million, down C$4 million from the C$126.2 million reported in the same period in 2008.

Overseas revenues were up and offset declines in North American Retail. 2009 book publishing operating profit was C$83.8 million, up C$16.3 million from the C$67.5 million reported in 2008, including an increase of $5.8 million due to the impact of foreign exchange. Operating profits were up in all three book publishing divisions. Operating profit before restructuring and other charges was C$139.0 million in 2009, down C$20.9 million from C$159.9 million in 2008.
