One World and nonprofit Little Free Library are teaming on an initiative to place 12 new book-sharing boxes featuring titles from the Random House imprint’s new One World Essentials line in communities across the U.S.

The Essentials series comprises a dozen backlist titles that “help readers understand and shape our changing world,” per the release, including Ibram X. Kendi’s How to Be an Antiracist and Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates.

For each of the 12 books in the line, Little Free Library and One World will install a custom-designed Little Free Library book-sharing box inspired by the title in a community with meaningful ties to the book and/or its author. Each location will receive 25 brand-new books from One World Essentials, provided by One World; a fully assembled, custom two-story Little Free Library; and installation materials and a support guide.

“Books are the essential medium for immersing ourselves in the kinds of art and ideas that can change communities, cultures, and, most importantly, our own private minds and hearts,” said Chris Jackson, One World EVP, publisher, and editor-in-chief. “The books in this series are not just about thinking, but rethinking, not just observing, but getting close, not just catharsis but movement to action. Most of all, they’re meant to be freely read and shared—and we’re excited to get them to more readers through this exciting partnership with Little Free Library.”

Applications from prospective stewards of the book-sharing boxes are currently open until February 15. A full list of designated locations and their corresponding titles can be found below.
