For decades, this has been the week when the industry would be gearing up for its annual spring conference in New York City, most recently known as BookExpo. That ritual ended in 2020, when organizers canceled the show due to the pandemic. Our coverage of the last BookExpo, in 2019, pointed to the strengths and weaknesses of the event and why no new in-person industrywide show appears to be in the offing. Attendees complained about the growing number of publishers who did not participate, which led some to question their own participation in the conference in future years.
