J.K. Rowling, E.L. James, and Ken Follett all had books on multiple lists around the world as September came to a close. The Casual Vacancy, J.K. Rowling’s first book for adults, landed at #1 in France and the U.K. when it was released late last month. Two spots behind Vacancy in France is another big author: Toni Morrison’s Home continues to sell well overseas after first being released in May 2012 from Knopf.
Fifty Shades of Grey, released in most markets this spring and summer, continued to dominate in Sweden, where it was only bested by Jan Guillou’s Dandy—the second volume in Guillou’s the Great Century series—that leapt from #10 to #1 last month.
Ken Follett’s Winter of the World got off to a fast start in September as well, landing in the top spot in Germany, following its release in late September (but before The Casual Vacancy). Debuting at #3 on the German nonfiction list is Beyond the Protocol by Nicole Maibaum and Bettina Wulff, the wife of former German president Christian Wulff. Last month, Wulff made headlines for her suit against Google for its autocomplete function, which she is arguing perpetuates rumors that she was once a prostitute. In the past few months alone, Wulff’s lawyers have stated that they’ve issued 34 cease-and-desist orders to German and foreign bloggers, and that fines have been issued for what’s been written about her.
