In France, Gone in the Night by Guillaume Musso, about a murderous group of school friends whose secrets are about to be revealed, was the top fiction title in July. Despite being one of the country’s most popular authors and being translated into 40 languages, Musso has yet to find a U.S. publisher. Another perennial bestseller, Marc Levy, took the second spot with his romantic comedy A Woman Like Her, and was followed by Joël Dicker’s novel, The Disappearance of Stephanie Mailer.
The Spanish, too, were taken with Swiss author Dicker’s novel, which knocked María Dueñas The Captain’s Daughters to the second spot. Nacho Caretero’s Fariña, an investigation into drug trafficking in Galicia, was the bestselling nonfiction book in the country at the end of July.
Polish-born Helena Janeczek fictionalized the relationship of Robert Capa and Gerda Taro during the Spanish Civil War in The Girl with the Leica, which bumped Andrea Camilleri’s The Catalanotti Method from the top spot in Italy. Janeczek’s novel, which won the 2017 Strega Prize, will be published in English by Europa Editions in 2019.
