Citing the growing popularity of reading and listening to books in English across Europe, Storytel has begun offering thousands of English-language titles for sale alongside its core digital audiobook streaming service in Sweden, Denmark and the Netherlands.
The Stockholm-based company, which offers an audiobook streaming platform and runs several publishing companies, launched the a la carte option with titles from from Penguin Random House and Hachette, and allows books to be purchased directly in the Storytel app and on storytel.com.
"While all-you-can-eat streaming will remain our core business, we're delighted to now offer users the option to purchase these premium titles individually, directly in the app," said Ronnie Hansen, VP business affairs at Storytel. "With these catalogue additions, we continue to solidify our position as a leading platform in the audiobook and e-book market."
The company said the expansion addresses the growing demand for English-language content among its younger users and reflects a broader increase in English-language reading worldwide. According to a Storytel survey, 40% of users under age 35 regularly listen to or read books in English. Existing Storytel subscribers will receive a discount on individual purchases, though the company did not provide details about pricing or the discount amount.
The individual sales model supplements Storytel's streaming service, which offers more than 1.8 million titles in 55 languages to over 2.6 million subscribers across its Storytel, Mofibo, and Audiobooks.com brands. Non-subscribers can also purchase titles without a subscription.
The company reported group revenue of SEK 1,013 million (approximately $95 million) in this year's third quarter, up 6% year-over-year. For the first nine months of 2025, Storytel posted revenue of SEK 2,925 million, compared with SEK 2,770 million in the same period of 2024.
