After being the Guest of Honor at Frankfurt this past fall, Spain and its literatures and cultures is back in the spotlight this week with the European Literature Network’s release of the Spain-focused issue of its print magazine, The Riveter, and a series of high-profile events.

Made possible by funding from Acción Cultural Española, Institut Ramón Llull, Etxepare Euskal Institutua, Xunta de Galicia, the Embassy of Spain in the U.K., and the Instituto Cervantes London, and guest edited by translator Katie Whittemore, this issue features excerpts, interviews, author and genre overviews, book reviews, and much more highlighting the four official languages of Spain: Castilian, Basque, Catalan, and Galician.

It features a mixture of established authors (Javier Marías, Almudena Grandes, Sara Mesa, Mercedes Rodoreda, Enrique Vila-Matas, Kirmen Uribe, and others); emerging voices in English translation (Xesús Fraga, Elizabeth Duval, Toni Sala, Katixa Agirre); and a variety of genres, including poetry, essay, children’s literature, science-fiction, and crime fiction.

The magazine is distributed free of charge to bookshops, libraries, colleges, and other organizations, and is widely available throughout the London Book Fair, as well as at several events at the Literary Translation Centre.

After the fair, on Friday, April 21 at 3 p.m, the Instituto Cervantes London will host “Riveting Writing from Multilingual Spain,” with Olga Castro, University of Warwick, Tina Kover, Translators Aloud, Rosie Goldsmith, The Riveter/European Literature Network, Ainhoa Sánchez, Acción Cultural Española, Robin Munby, Aritz Branton, Mara Faye Lethem, Jacob Rogers, and Katie Whittemore.

And on Tuesday, April 25 at 7 p.m., the official launch will take place at the British Library and will celebrate readings by writers and translators featured in the magazine; and broadcaster Robert Elms will relate his experiences as a columnist and broadcaster enamored of Spain. Author participants will include Rosa Montero, one of Spain’s most acclaimed living writers, journalist and writer Juan Cruz, and others.

All event information–along with free digital editions of all issues of The Rivetercan be found at the European Literature Network website.
