I have finally dried the tears from my eyes after staying up way too late last night to finish Bonobo Handshake: A Memoir of Love and Adventure in the Congo (Gotham, May). I had no idea that I would fall in love with Vanessa Woods's book on the first page; I reallcan't stop talking about it. I read so many passages out loud to my husband through my tears. I liked the author's humor and found her facts about the fighting in the Congo fascinating. Her humane approach to the care and raising of orphaned bonobos is very moving. I felt as though I was there with her through the emotional roller coaster she experienced with each new animal. I don't remember learning about these small primates in college; now I'm totally fascinated with them. The writing is particularly compelling, and the episodes Woods recounts are phenomenal. Thank you so much for this lovely book; it has certainly changed a part of my life.
