Comixology Inks Deal to Add Koyama Press Titles

Digital comics marketplace Comixology is marking the opening of this year’s Small Press Expo with a deal to offer titles from Canadian indie house Koyama Press to its inventory of digital comics.

The deal will add 12 titles from Koyama Press to Comixology, which is owned by Amazon, and to the Kindle Platform. Koyama Press was founded in 2007 by its publisher Annie Koyama. The addition of titles from Koyama Press marks the opening of this year’s Small Press Expo, an annual festival of independent and self-published comics and graphic novels held September 17-18 in Bethesda, Md.

Comixology has supported SPX the last four years through its sponsorship of the Ignatz Awards, the SPX festival prizes, which are named after the classic George Herriman cartoon character and awarded for outstanding achievement in comics and cartooning.

Koyama Press founder and publisher Annie Koyama said the deal to offer digital versions of its titles is part of its mandate “to promote and support a wide range of emerging to established artists. This is a natural next step to having the books available in the widest manner possible.” Koyama Press will be exhibiting at tables W10-11A at SPX.

Among the titles being added to the Comixology digital inventory are Julia Wertz’s Drinking at the Movies and The Infinite Wait and other Stories; Alex Schubert’s Blobby Boys Vol. 1 and 2, John Martz’s A Cat Named Tim and Other Stories, and Comics Class by Matthew Forsythe.

“We couldn’t be happier to expand the audience for Koyama Press,” said Comixology CEO and founder David Steinberger. “From Julia Wertz to John Martz, Koyama Press’ catalog is a goldmine of cutting edge comic content that has few peers. Annie Koyama is one of the leading lights in the small press movement.”
