Record Number of E-books and Audiobooks Borrowed from Library in 2016

According to digital reading platform OverDrive, the trend in digital reading continued its uninterrupted growth in 2016 as a record number of readers turned to their local library and school for e-books and audiobooks. Readers borrowed 196 million digital books, an increase of 21% over 2015. Of the 678 million visits to library and school websites, readers borrowed more e-books (+16%) and audiobooks (+34%) from their local and school libraries digital catalog compared to last year. The most popular e-book borrowed from libraries in 2016 was A Murder in Time  by Julie McElwain (Pegasus), and the most popular audiobook was The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins (Books on Tape).
